The NSF S-STEM program in the
Department of Mathematics
at the University of Texas at Arlington
is funded by the grants from
the National Science Foundation.
The current support is provided by the grant A Comprehensive System for Undergraduates to Reach Goals in Education (SURGE).
The goal of the SURGE program is
to increase the quality and number of students successfully completing
bachelor's degrees in mathematics. This is done by providing a need-based scholarship to qualified
undergraduate math majors and by mentoring those students to succeed academically. The SURGE scholarship
pays up to $5,000 per academic semester ($10,000 per year) depending on the
financial-aid need determined by FAFSA. The eligibility is restricted to US citizens and permanent residents.
The expectations from the SURGE scholars include the attendance in monthly SURGE meetings with SURGE faculty, attendance in biweekly MAA meetings, being a math major, willingness to be mentored, and timely progress toward graduation. Preference is given to students who have completed the calculus sequence and linear algebra, but all serious and strong math majors are considered.
Our SURGE program is managed by a team consisting of Profs.
Tuncay Aktosun, Ruth Gornet, Hristo Kojouharov,
Barbara Shipman, and Jianzhong Su
from the
Department of Mathematics.
The application to the SURGE program is as follows.
Any student who would like to be considered for a SURGE scholarship should contact Dr. Aktosun (e-mail:
aktosun@uta.edu) via e-mail. Dr. Aktosun will then respond to the e-mail by providing a brief list of
questions that the student should answer and e-mail back to him.
Dr. Aktosun will then share the information provided by the applicant with the SURGE faculty.
Once a decision is made on the application, Dr. Aktosun will communicate with the applicant regarding the outcome.
In the beginning of each semester, every math major is informed by e-mail and invited to apply for the SURGE scholarship.
